We develop Airborne Wind Energy systems with an autonomous aircraft that convert wind at higher altitudes into electricity; a cost effective technology using an abundant natural resource. 


Your role includes the following activities and skills
Ampyx Power is starting up a test centre, currently planned for County Mayo, Ireland, that shall become operational end 2018 using our next prototype AP-3 Airborne Wind Energy System (AWES). You will start your Ampyx Power career however in The Hague, The Netherlands after which you will be joining the AP-3 system verification program in Ireland .

As AP-3 becomes operational you are in charge of the formal verification aspects of AP-3 flights: you make sure the right data on systems and dynamics are collected, reported and analysed and whenever problems occur you are the key figure in the root cause analysis. With your expert knowledge and enthusiasm, you ensure that Ampyx Power comes through with its promise of innovation. 



In particular you will be working on:

  • System verification activities, including test planning, test case development, test execution and test result processing
  • Verification aspects of flight operations (including RPA, power generation apparatus and launch & land apparatus): ensure data collection, analysis and reporting to validate continuous improvement steps and to verify in-flight performance of algorithms and software (flight dynamics), structures, mechanisms, avionics, sensors, response to contingencies. 
  • Development of flight test cards, briefing the flight crew on particular flight tests and objectives as well as relaying feedback from the flight crew to engineering. 
  • Support assurance of associated knowledge and configuration management.
  • Perform root cause analysis and follow up on problem reports
  • Define mitigating actions
  • Manage technical risk evaluations and report results to Chief Maintenance Officer 

Requirements

Desired skills and experience

As a Verification Engineer you have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering or equivalent with 5 years of experience in a process-driven environment, working on design and/or verification of complex multidisciplinary systems.
And:
  • You can balance pragmatism and quality flexibly to meet the current project needs 
  • You work efficiently in a team and support your colleagues
  • You are able to proactively pick tasks and take ownership
  • You are willing to take part in flight testing campaigns world-wide (>6 months). 
  • You like to learn new skills in case it is required and you contribute to and follow development processes. 
  • You are good at writing technical documentation and as you will be member of an international team you are proficient in English.

You have:

  • Understanding of the basic principles of flight dynamics
  • Good understanding of dynamic sensor technology and their limitations (IMU, GNSS, air data probe etc.).
  • Completed an end-to-end verification process on at least one system. 

Highly beneficial will be:

  • Practical familiarity with electrical design, RF systems, avionics and electromechanical actuators.
  • Basic understanding of flight algorithms and software
  • Experience with UAV operations

Ampyx Power is located in The Netherlands in the centre of The Hague. As our new Verification Engineer you will however travel along with our tethered aircraft. A test field is present in Kraggenburg, The Netherlands, 2 hours’ drive from the Ampyx Power office, and full system tests are now planned to be performed in Ireland. 

Our office in The Hague is easily accessible for candidates from, for example, Utrecht, Amsterdam, Delft, Zoetermeer, Leiden, Rotterdam, Dordrecht and Haarlem.
