What are you going to do?
You will be based in The Hague, The Netherlands. Here you will be joining the AP-3 Airborne Wind Energy System (AWES) verification team. AP-3 is our pre commercial prototype aircraft, a 12 meter wingspan 150 kiloWatt demonstrator of our safety architecture and fully automated operations. 

By being immersed in the testing of AP-3 avionics and mechanisms, you will get to familiarize yourself with the AP-3 systems behavior. This is a necessity for your next assignment. Ampyx Power is starting up a test centre for AP-3, likely in County Mayo, Ireland, that shall become operational late 2019. As soon as AP-3 is ready to operate you will be a regular visitor of the test site and take charge of the formal system verification aspects of AP-3 flights: you will make sure the aircraft flies in the proper and safe configuration and all critical systems have passed their functional tests and are ready for launch. 

You will make sure the right data are collected on systems, sensors and dynamics. And that these data are reported and analyzed. Whenever problems occur you will be a key figure in the root cause analysis and you segregate non-conforming components. With your expert knowledge and enthusiasm, you will ensure that Ampyx Power comes through with its promise of innovation. 

In particular you will be working on:

  • System verification activities, including test planning, test case development, test execution and test data processing
  • Verification aspects of flight operations (including RPA, power generation apparatus and launch & land apparatus): ensure data collection, analysis and reporting to validate continuous improvement steps and to verify in-flight performance of algorithms and software (flight dynamics), structures, mechanisms, avionics, sensors, response to contingencies. 
  • Development of flight test cards, briefing the flight crew on particular flight tests and objectives as well as relaying feedback from the flight crew to engineering. 
  • Support assurance of associated knowledge and configuration management of systems & software.
  • Assuring flight readiness of systems & software, including functional testing and Hardware-In-The-Loop testing
  • Perform root cause analysis and follow up on problem reports
  • Define mitigating actions
  • Manage technical risk evaluations and report results to Chief Maintenance Officer 


What do we need from you to complement the team?

 As a UAV System Engineer you have a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in aerospace engineering, electrical engineering or equivalent with 5 years of experience in a process-driven environment working on design and/or verification of complex multidisciplinary systems. You work efficiently in a team and support your colleagues, you are able to proactively pick tasks and take ownership, and you are willing to take part in flight testing campaigns world-wide (totaling 3-6 months per year). You like to learn new skills in case it is required and you contribute to and follow development processes. 

You are good at writing technical documentation and as you will be member of an international team you are proficient in English.

You have:

  • Understanding of the basic principles of flight dynamics
  • Good understanding of dynamic sensor technology and their limitations (IMU, GNSS, air data probe etc.).
  • Completed an end-to-end verification process on at least one system.
  • Basic understanding of flight algorithms, software and coding

And experience with one of the 2 following::

  • Practical familiarity with electrical design, RF systems, avionics and electromechanical systems.
  • Experience with UAV operations as ground station operator and/or technician (system installation etc.)
