What are you going to do?

We work in teams to meet our milestones. These are examples of the teams that we have: the Flight Algorithms Team, the Electronics Team, the Aircraft Design Team, the Software Team, the Flight Operations Team, etc. This vacancy is within our Mechatronics team, a group of 8 experienced Mechatronics Systems Engineers developing automated machines for power generation and launch & land operations.

As a member of the Mechatronics team, you will be involved in the complete development cycle (Conceptual, preliminary and detail design; integration, testing and verification) of our ground and offshore based systems used for the energy conversion, tether handling and automation of the platform mechanisms. In your role you will support the development of the current 3rd generation power generator unit and platform (AP-3) which are scheduled to fly in the second half of 2021, gaining insights on the state-of-the-art in AWE ground systems performance and scalability. Additionally, you will support the conceptual development of our 4th generation, one megawatt, power generation system for onshore and eventually offshore deployment,

In particular you may initially be working on:

  • 150 kW drivetrain and tether handling system commissioning and debugging (AP-3 system)
  • Project management, supplier management and system engineering of the performance analysis and conceptual development of large drive trains, energy storage solutions and power generation systems (megawatt scale AP-4 system), electrical, hydraulic and/or mechanical
  • Supporting the integration and verification of automated mechanisms and large-scale test set-ups


What do we need from you to complement the team?

You have an Engineering degree within the realm of mechatronics with 8+ years of experience in the design and development of complex systems including electrical, mechanical and automation aspects.

Ideally you:

  • Are a team player;
  • Are proactive and you take ownership;
  • Like to learn new skills;
  • Adhere to processes and help improving them;
  • Report in a precise and concise manner;
  • Good at writing technical documentation;
  • As you will be part of an international team, you are proficient in English (speaking and writing).

We’d also like you to have in-depth knowledge of / experience with:

  • Electrical power systems: frequency drives, active front ends, storage.
  • Electrical and/or Hydraulic drive trains: architecture, performance assessment, development, implementation
  • PLC software development
  • Energy conversion systems
  • System engineering processes, esp. requirement specification and systematic verification

Not a must-have, but we’d very much welcome the following experiences:

  • Project management
  • Industrial automation hardware
  • Electrical drawings and electrical equipment
  • 3D CAD software (e.g. Solidworks)
  • Experience with MATLAB / Simulink
  • Winch development, rope handling
