We’re currently looking for a Fiber Rope Specialist to join our team!

What are you going to do?
We work in teams to meet our milestones. These are examples of the teams that we have: the Flight Algorithms Team, the Electronics Team, the Aircraft Design Team, the Software Team, the Flight Operations Team, etc. This vacancy is within our Mechatronics team, a group of 8 experienced engineers.

As a member of the Mechatronics team, you will be working on:

  • Technical development of Ampyx's fiber rope tether design, connecting the aircraft to the ground-based generator
  • Testing of various tether designs on a high-speed, high-tension in-house rope testing platform (including machine commissioning, operation, and analysis of results).
  • Guiding the company on tether development and future direction as the in-house expert on fiber ropes, leading efforts to identify the most technically and financially suitable tether design for Ampyx’s application (including developing close relationships with experts in industry and academia).

Requirements

What do we need from you to complement the team?

You have a Bachelor or Master’s degree in mechanical engineering with 6-8 years of experience in fiber rope design, testing and production.

Ideally you:

  • Are a team player;
  • Are proactive and you take ownership;
  • Like to learn new skills;
  • Adhere to processes and help improving them;
  • Report in a precise and concise manner;
  • Good at writing technical documentation.
  • As you will be part of an international team, you are proficient in English (speaking and writing).

We’d also like you to have extensive knowledge of:

  • Mechanical rope handling systems (including winches, sheaves and spooling devices).
  • Rope design theory (from fiber level to braided product) for innovative applications and challenging environments.
  • Large scale rope testing (including setting test requirements, machine specification, commissioning and test operation).
  • The fiber rope market (including fiber producers, rope manufacturers and end users across a range of industries) and the various fiber types, braiding techniques and rope coating technologies currently on the market and under development.
  • Not a must-have, but we’d very much welcome the following experiences:
  • Rope testing machinery development (from conception to realization).
  • Familiarity with rope monitoring systems (including RFIDs, load cells and temperature measurements).
  • Contractor, manufacturer and supplier management.
  • Research and development of new rope products (particular 10-40 mm fiber ropes).
  • Hands on experience in an industrial-level rope manufacturing and testing environment.
  • Strong commercial awareness and ability to identify solutions that represent good value.
  • Understanding of system engineering methods and specification for suppliers (requirements, design justification, statement of work).
