We’re currently looking for an External Pilot (Remote Control Pilot) to join our team!


Ampyx Power is developing an ‘Airborne Wind Energy’ (AWE) technology and system that can harvest the powerful wind at high altitude using tethered unmanned aircraft. This year we will be testing and fielding our prototype AWE systems.

What are you going to do?
As a member of the flight operations team, you will take an important role in flight operations of our AWE systems. As an External Pilot (Remote Control Pilot) you will serve as safety pilot during critical flight testing phase as well as take-off and landing operations if needed.
In particular you will have the following responsibilities:

  • Act as a safety pilot during flight testing
  • Working in coordination with the Mission Commander and Air Vehicle Operator
  • Flight campaigns including logistics, preparation of equipment, pre-flight of aircraft, test field preparations.
  • Execute flight operations checklists, procedures, manuals and logging in strong collaboration with flight crew.
  • Participate in incident processing and mitigating measures
  • Prepare Pre- and Post- Flight Briefing
  • Provide important feedback such as aircraft handling quality to the Flight Test Engineers
  • You will be working outside for the majority of the flight testing day
  • You’re willing to travel with minimal notice for extended periods of time.

Requirements

What do we need from you to complement the team?

 As our new External Pilot (Remote Control Pilot), you will have a minimum of 2-year Technical Degree preferably in a technology related field. You work efficiently independently and you will be required to work odd shifts during flight test campaigns. You have effective and professional verbal and written communication skills, and as you will be a member of an international team, proficiency in English language is a must. 
And:

  • You are a very experienced RC pilot with exceptional flying ability on fixed-wing aircraft. 
  • You must be comfortable with flying large, heavy wing loading platforms (25kg or heavier).
  • You must be able to demonstrate the ability to control the aircraft while precisely maintaining altitude, attitude, track and airspeed
  • You must be able to work under stressful conditions, and be able to demonstrate the ability to recover the aircraft from unusual attitude quickly while maintaining effective communication with other crew members
  • RPAS license and/or Private Pilot License

A plus but not a must would be:

  • Basic understanding of flight dynamics and aircraft performance
  • Previous exposure to process based engineering 
  • Operational experience in an environment where strict safety procedures are in place 
  • Computer skills such as Microsoft, Linux, or UNIX, and a working knowledge of networks are required in addition to an operational understanding of Local Area Networks

You may be required to pass a Class-2 flight medical examination.
